The “Jazzthing Next Generation” series, on which Esther Kaiser, Anette von Eichel, Ignaz Dinné, Benjamin Schäfer, Martin Auer, Oktoposse Cyminology, Christian Krischkowsky, Nadia Maria Fischer, Gary Fuhrmann, Tré and Coustics have debuted on Double Moon Records, is now being continued – already with Volume 12.
Munich’s Tobias Hofmann really deserves being called a “multi-talent”. In addition to his main instruments trumpet and flugelhorn, he also plays a good piano, bass and drums, and he already started as a singer in the Tölzer Boys Choir and later founded an a-capella quintet. He also studied composing under Rob Pronk in Rotterdam. Because that was obviously not enough to take full advantage of the unbelievable creativity of the today 32 year old, he studied at Ernst Busch College of Acting in Berlin. After graduation, he also immediately attracted attention, worked under directors such as Peter Zadek and Manfred Karge, and performed in theaters in Karlsruhe and Dresden. During all of this, he work on compositions for films and television. The “multitasking” ability of Tobias seems unlimited, especially since none of his skills suffers from his dedication to the others. He emphasized, “I really like doing different things. They have a stimulating influence on each other. After a theater project, I usually really feel like doing something with music. And, above all, it clears your head. I don’t want to commit myself solely to just one thing yet.” He hand-picked his quintet. It is composed of instrumentalists, who are all established musicians in the scene in Munich and Germany, who have gained experience in numerous bands and fulfill the high demands of Tobias completely. The six compositions and arrangements by Hofmann – complicated but still very pleasant to listen to – are mastered in just as relaxed a manner by the musicians as are the songs by Tom Harrell ("Angela"), Freddie Hubbard ("Little Sunflower") and Sidney Bechet ("Petite Fleur").
